Veterans Day: A Time to Honor Retired Military Personnel
For those who live in America, the patriotic season begins in late May with Memorial Day and goes on to November, when we honor our recent and past war veterans on Veterans Day. There are also other patriotic holidays during that period, including Flag Day, the 4th of July and Labor Day. Those are the major patriotic holidays but there are also plenty of others. The first holiday actually comes before Memorial Day and is called Armed Forces Day. Then in September we have Patriot Day and Citizenship Day, followed by United Nations Day in October.
Many people in the U.S. take the major patriotic holidays seriously, as well as some of the minor ones. This is probably partially due to the fact that so many people have veterans in their families, or at least have contact with people who served in the American armed forces. For people with connections to armed forces personnel, the patriotic holidays are personal. That is probably the reason why many people use Veterans Day vintage postcards or veterans clipart to send cards that honor veterans when each Veterans Day comes around. Sending a remembrance like a card to a retired soldier can make a world of difference to a veteran who might think his or her service to our country has been forgotten.
This especially applies to soldiers returning from Iraq. They have experienced some true horrors and deserved to be thanked for doing that on our behalf. People don’t make a fuss over Veterans Day like they do with the Fourth of July, so it would be easy for veterans to think we don’t care. In many cases, no one was waving the American flag when they returned. And people don’t usually throw parties for Veterans Day either. That’s probably because most people don’t want to remember sad things.
It would probably be better to just celebrate retired veterans every time we come across them. That will let them know we appreciate their contributions all year-round, not just on Veterans Day. That small remembrance can mean a lot to someone who has served their country but may feel forgotten.
